Some people claim that submitting your website to directories is no longer effective.  This is true to some extent.  You are not going to rank well for highly competitive terms like poker, gambling, or even rakeback by using directory submissions.

What directory submissions do accomplish however is two fold. The first is randomization.  Varying where your links comes from helps to make your link profile more natural and directory submissions help to accomplish this goal.  Another thing that directory submissions help you to do is to rank for long tail keywords.

Long tail keywords are phrases like “Highest Absolute Poker Rakeback”.  While this term may get little traffic, it still gets some.  Take 50 or 100 similar phrases and rank well for them and you are suddenly generating traffic from low volume search terms with little to no competition.  The other nice thing about directory submissions is that with the right tool you can do them extremely fast and have it cost nothing.
